    Volunteer Opportunities

Coaching youth sports is a rewarding experience! When kids have fun in sports, they stay involved, team spirit soars and personal performance improves. Coaches set the tone for achieving that fun through caring, positive communication, and well-structured skills development in practice and games.

If you are interested in head coaching or assistant coaching a rec sports team, reach out to Rec Director Wendell Hughes or Rec Secretary Angel Samp

All volunteers will need to fill out and submit a background check form.

  • Youth Scholarships are available for recreation programs through the Grant Rogers Burd Memorial Fund

Through the generosity of the Burd family, we are able to offer recreational sports scholarships for families in need. If you are in need of a scholarship, simply answer yes during the registration process and the discount will be automatically applied to your registration fee (jersey cost not included in the scholarship).

This fund was established to honor the memory of Grant Rogers Burd who passed away from a rare mitochondrial condition before he was able to participate in any Community Recreation programs. Grant was diagnosed with Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex Deficiency (PDCD) when he was 2 months old. Kids with PDCD have special needs and seldom live to reach adolescence because their bodies cannot process energy in normal ways. Despite this, there are cases of PDCD where kids have been able to play rec sports with special accommodations.

Grant passed away in July of 2016 when he was just 6 months old. The Burd Family’s greatest hope for Grant was that he would someday be able to run on a field with his friends and twin brother Griffin.

To honor Grant, this fund will be used to provide for children who need financial support to be involved in the sports and activities offered by Saugatuck Community Recreation and Fennville Community Recreation.
